The NATO Maritime GEOMETOC Centre of Excellence was pleased to participate in the ESA Space for Maritime Security Workshop, held in Lisbon on 7–8 September 2026, with a keynote address delivered by its Director, Navy Captain Miguel Arenga.
Organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Eurisy, the workshop brought together stakeholders to explore how space-based capabilities can strengthen maritime security, resilience, surveillance, crisis response and informed decision-making in an increasingly complex security environment.
In his intervention, the COE Director highlighted the role of NATO Centres of Excellence in connecting people, knowledge, technology and operational requirements, underlining that their value lies not only in the expertise they provide, but also in the collaboration and capabilities they help develop.
He also emphasized the growing importance of space-based services for maritime operations, including satellite communications, positioning and navigation, Earth observation and Space Weather information. He stressed the importance of connecting these capabilities with operational users and decision-making processes to ensure that space-enabled information can translate into tangible operational value.
Through participation in the workshop, the COE reinforced its commitment to supporting NATO and its partners in transforming environmental knowledge, space-enabled data, technology and collaboration into operational advantage in the maritime domain.
