The NATO Maritime GEOMETOC Centre of Excellence has formalized a Cooperation Arrangement with the University of Coimbra, through its Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory, establishing a strategic partnership to advance collaboration in the field of Space Weather and related scientific and operational domains.
The arrangement provides a framework for joint research and innovation, education and training activities, participation in workshops, conferences and operational exercises, as well as internship opportunities for master's degree students. It also promotes the exchange of expertise between both institutions, bridging academic excellence with operational requirements to enhance capabilities relevant to NATO and the wider GEOMETOC community.
A key focus of this cooperation is Space Weather, whose effects on satellite communications, positioning, navigation and timing (PNT), radar systems, and other critical technologies can directly influence military operations and decision-making. By combining the University of Coimbra's internationally recognized scientific expertise with the COE's operational knowledge, the partnership will contribute to improving Space Weather awareness, research, training and operational support for the Alliance.
This Cooperation Arrangement reflects a shared commitment to scientific excellence, innovation and the development of knowledge and capabilities in an increasingly important operational domain, reinforcing NATO's ability to understand and respond to the impacts of the space environment on maritime operations.
