Space Weather and Operational Impacts Course

27-30 May 2026

The COE participated in the “Space Weather and Operational Impacts” course, held from 27 to 30 April at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra (UC).

This course was designed for military personnel interested in understanding space weather phenomena and their effects on critical decision-support systems and military operations.

Throughout four days, participants engaged with topics such as:

  • Solar physics and sources of space weather
  • Ionospheric effects caused by solar storms
  • Technological disruptions affecting critical infrastructure
  • Data analysis and forecasting of space weather impacts

The program included expert-led sessions, practical exercises, and a visit to the Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of UC, fostering knowledge exchange and operational awareness. This initiative reinforced the importance of understanding space weather for enhancing mission resilience and critical systems reliability in military operations.

Participation in the course strengthened collaboration between the University of Coimbra, Maritime GEOMETOC COE and military stakeholders, supporting innovation and resilience in response to emerging environmental challenges.
