The NATO Maritime Geospatial, Meteorological & Oceanographic Centre of Excellence held its first education and training course, “Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) Support to Maritime Operations”, from 26 to 30 May 2025, at its facilities in Lisbon, Portugal.
The course was conducted with the support of the School of Hydrography and Oceanography of the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute and brought together participants from NATO Nations.
This one-week programme aimed at enhancing GEOMETOC and operational readiness across the Alliance by providing instruction in the following areas:
- NATO doctrine governing REA, METOC, and geospatial support
- Assessment of environmental conditions and their impact on naval operations
- Operational environmental modelling and data collection techniques
- Production of REA products, including Mission Impact Diagrams, Tactical Decision Aids, and Amphibious Operation Graphics
- Standards for REA dissemination and NATO reporting formats
The course combined lectures and practical exercises, and was delivered by instructors from the COE, Portuguese Navy, and external experts. It is listed in NATO’s Education and Training Opportunities Catalogue.
The COE will continue to develop and deliver training opportunities in support of NATO’s maritime geospatial, meteorological and oceanographic requirements.
