COE Expands NATO Training Opportunities with Second Edition of REA Course

02-06 March 2026

The COE delivered the second edition of the course “Rapid Environmental Assessment support to Maritime Operations” from 2–6 March 2026 at its headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal.

Building on the successful launch of the programme in 2025, this year’s course continued to support the development of environmental awareness and operational decision-making within NATO maritime operations. Participants from several NATO nations attended the training, strengthening cooperation and knowledge exchange across the Alliance.

Throughout the week, participants explored how Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) supports naval planning and execution by providing timely analysis of environmental conditions that may affect maritime operations.

The training combined theoretical instruction with scenario-based practical activities, enabling participants to apply analytical tools and methodologies used in operational environments.

The course was conducted with the support of the School of Hydrography and Oceanography of the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute.

Lectures and practical sessions were delivered by instructors from the Maritime GEOMETOC COE, members of the Portuguese GEOMETOC Centre, and invited specialists, providing a multidisciplinary perspective on maritime environmental support.

The course forms part of NATO’s Education and Training Opportunities Catalogue and contributes to the Alliance’s broader efforts to enhance GEOMETOC capabilities and interoperability.

The NATO Maritime Geospatial, Meteorological and Oceanographic Centre of Excellence will continue to expand its education and training programme in support of NATO maritime operations.

Information on future courses is available on the Education & Training page.
