Visit of the U.S. 6th Fleet Commander, Vice Admiral Lisa Franchetti

On 29th of March 2019, Vice Admiral Lisa M. Franchetti (US NAVY), current commander of the United States 6th Fleet and STRIKFORNATO (NAVAL STRIKING AND SUPPORT FORCES NATO), visited the MARITIME GEOMETOC CENTER to get to know the work carried out by this Centre in the field of the Operational Support to Portuguese and NATO Allied Naval Operations, as well as in the research and development of new GEOMETOC capabilities (tools, products and services).


The visit included briefings from the PORTUGUESE NAVAL STAFF and from the Director of the MARITIME GEOMETOC CENTRE, focusing the presentation of the centre and the development of the Portuguese initiative to establish the future NATO MARITIME GEOMETOC CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE.

The US 6th Fleet is a numbered fleet of the United States Navy, operating as part of United States Naval Forces Europe. Its stated mission is to "conduct the full range of Maritime Operations and Theatre Security Cooperation missions, in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other parties, in order to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa."

STRIKFORNATO is the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe’s (SACEUR) premier, rapidly deployable headquarters, capable of providing a flexible, maritime power projection force. First established in 1953 as STRIKFORSOUTH and redesignated as STRIKFORNATO in 2004, is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) organisation within the NATO Force Structure (NFS) consisting of twelve member nations: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
