REP(MUS)19 - Recognized Environmental Picture Atlantic Exercise hosted by Portugal

11-27 September 2019

The annual Recognized Environmental Picture Atlantic Exercise (REP) took place, once again, in Portugal, near Tróia peninsula, from 11th to 27th of September 2019.

The 10th edition, brought several Allied Partners to participate in a common technology evaluation exercise, this year under NATO's Maritime Unmanned Systems Initiative (MUS). The exercise was jointly organized by the Portuguese Navy, the Underwater Systems and Technology Laboratory of the Porto University and the NATO STO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation. It had the participation from the Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States.

The main goal of the exercise was the evaluation of new Maritime Unmanned Systems, under development by Allied nations, Academia and Industry partners, collaborating with each other in defense technology. Multiple Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), were tasked to fulfill different operational challenges, under Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) and Recognized Environmental Picture (REP) operations. The ultimate goal of this endeavor was to test assets' interoperability (acquisition, transmission and data integration) to build a Common Operational Picture to support military decision making.

The exercise was a success, and enabled participants to share knowledge and experiences, in a real collaborative environment, focusing on the development and evaluation of new operational concepts and to test state-of-the-art technological solutions, procedures and tactics for MUS in real-life scenarios.

The Maritime GEOMETOC Center participated in the REP(MUS) exercise by coordinating Rapid Environmental Assessment series, performing technology evaluation, and providing GEOMETOC support for the whole exercise.
